Aluminum Facade Cladding — A Defining Trend in Vietnamese Architecture

Facade cladding consists of decorative metal panels mounted on a building’s exterior, serving a dual purpose: visual identity and functional performance — shading, natural ventilation, and privacy. CNC laser-cut aluminum panels feature perforated patterns that allow light and air to pass through while obscuring direct line-of-sight from the outside.

Across Vietnam’s southern provinces, laser-cut aluminum facades have become the new standard for commercial buildings, shopping centers, hotels, and high-end residential projects from 2024 onward. Compared to traditional glass curtain walls, patterned aluminum facades give each building a unique character while reducing solar heat gain by 30-40% — a critical consideration in the tropical climate of Binh Duong and Ho Chi Minh City.

Laser Tuan Thinh, based in Thu Dau Mot, Binh Duong, specializes in CNC laser-cut aluminum facade panels — from simple geometric screens to complex curved cladding systems. This guide covers materials, fabrication process, design specifications, and pricing.

Why Aluminum for Facades?

Aluminum is the material of choice for architects and contractors designing exterior cladding. It outperforms steel and stainless steel across several critical criteria:

Lightweight — Reduced Structural Load

Aluminum has a density of just 2.7 g/cm3, approximately 65% lighter than steel and 66% lighter than stainless steel. This has major implications for high-rise facades: each square meter of 3mm aluminum panel weighs roughly 8.1 kg, compared to 23.5 kg for steel at the same thickness. Lower panel weight means a lighter sub-frame, fewer anchors, and significantly reduced structural costs.

Natural Corrosion Resistance

Aluminum forms a self-healing oxide layer (Al2O3) on its surface immediately upon exposure to air. This oxide protects the base metal without flaking, rusting, or — critically — dripping rust stains onto concrete walls. Rust streaking is a pervasive problem with mild steel facades, permanently staining building exteriors.

Any Color via Powder Coating

Aluminum bonds exceptionally well with powder coating. Over 200 RAL color codes are available — from the popular anthracite gray (RAL 7016) favored in contemporary architecture, to champagne gold, wood tones, and brilliant white. Outdoor polyester powder coatings last 15+ years with no fading, chalking, or peeling.

100% Recyclable

Aluminum is infinitely recyclable with no loss of material properties. When a building is eventually demolished after 30-50 years, all aluminum panels retain high scrap value — a significant advantage for projects pursuing green building certifications (LEED, EDGE, LOTUS).

Recommended Alloys for Facade Work

AlloyPropertiesFacade Application
5052-H32Ductile, easy to bend, excellent corrosion resistanceFlat panels with cut patterns, facades with fold lines
1100-H14Soft, easy to form, lowest costInterior decorative panels, ceilings, partitions
6061-T6Strong, load-bearing, premium anodized finishSub-frame structural members, load-bearing brackets

Default recommendation: For laser-cut facade panels, 5052-H32 is the optimal choice — rigid enough to keep large panels flat, ductile enough to form edge hems, and outstanding outdoor corrosion resistance.

Our Facade Fabrication Process

Step 1: Design Review

Architects or contractors submit drawings in DWG, DXF, or AI format — including panel layout, cut pattern, and joint details. Our engineering team reviews:

  • Open area ratio — affects panel structural rigidity
  • Minimum bridge width between pattern elements
  • Panel dimensions vs. maximum cutting capacity
  • Aluminum grain direction for panels requiring bends

If you have a concept but no production-ready drawings, we provide pattern development from initial sketches or mood boards.

Step 2: CNC Laser Cutting

Raw aluminum sheets (maximum size 1,220 x 2,440mm) are fed into our fiber laser cutting system. The laser cuts through aluminum using high-pressure nitrogen assist gas, producing edges that are clean, burr-free, and oxide-free — eliminating the need for post-cut edge grinding on most patterns.

Technical specifications:

ParameterValue
Cutting thickness1.5 – 6mm aluminum
Cutting tolerance+/-0.1mm
Maximum panel size1,220 x 2,440mm
Minimum bridge width2mm (3mm+ recommended for outdoor panels)
Minimum hole diameterEqual to sheet thickness (e.g., 3mm aluminum = 3mm min. hole)
Cutting speed3-12 m/min depending on thickness

Step 3: Hem Bending and Forming

After cutting, panels are CNC-bent to form 90-degree edge hems (typically 20-40mm wide) around the perimeter. This dramatically increases panel rigidity and creates a flat mounting surface. Flat panels without edge hems will warp under thermal cycling.

For curved facades or 3D panels, aluminum is roll-bent to the designed radius.

Step 4: Surface Treatment and Coating

Panels undergo chemical pretreatment (alkaline etch, zirconium conversion, rinse, dry) followed by electrostatic powder coating with outdoor-grade polyester powder in an enclosed booth. Curing at 180-200 degrees C for 15-20 minutes.

For more on powder coating, see our guide: Powder Coating Services in Binh Duong.

Step 5: Quality Control and Packing

Every panel is inspected for: flatness (under 2mm/m deviation), coating quality (no bubbles, no runs), dimensional accuracy (+/-0.5mm overall), and mounting hole alignment. Panels are protected with PE film, interleaved with PE foam sheets, and crated in wooden boxes for long-distance transport.

Popular Facade Pattern Styles

Geometric Patterns

The most common and cost-effective option. Includes: square grids, hexagonal honeycomb, diamonds, triangles, offset circles. Geometric patterns deliver a modern, clean, industrial aesthetic — ideal for office buildings, showrooms, and commercial centers.

Advantage: Easy to design, repeating tile layout, uniform open area distribution, optimized material utilization (minimal waste).

Organic Patterns

Nature-inspired designs: leaves, ocean waves, clouds, tree branches, coral. Organic patterns create a soft, artistic atmosphere — suited for hotels, spas, restaurants, and villas.

Important note: Organic patterns typically have variable bridge widths. Every point on the pattern must maintain a minimum 2mm bridge to prevent panel failure.

Traditional Vietnamese Motifs

Lotus flowers, chrysanthemums, cloud scrolls, key fret borders, stylized temple roof lines. Applied to pagodas, temples, cultural centers, and projects incorporating Vietnamese identity into contemporary architecture.

Gradient Patterns

Pattern density varies progressively — sparse at the top (more light) transitioning to dense at the bottom (more privacy), or the reverse. Gradient effects create striking visual depth on large-scale facades.

Logo and Branding Integration

Company logos or brand patterns laser-cut through facade panels — when LED strips illuminate from behind at night, the logo becomes a luminous feature. Popular for showrooms, corporate headquarters, and retail centers.

Technical Specifications and Design Guidelines

Mounting Methods

MethodDescriptionBest For
Z-clipPanel hooks onto Z-shaped rails fixed to wall/sub-frame. Easy to remove and replace individual panelsMaintainable facades, low-rise buildings
Hidden rivetRivets installed from behind — front face shows no fastener points. Clean appearancePremium facades, hotels, villas
Sub-frame systemAluminum extrusion rails mounted to wall, panels screw-fixed to rails. Best wind load resistanceHigh-rise, high-wind zones, large panels

Wind Load — Mandatory for High-Rise

Facade panels at height must withstand design wind pressure per TCVN 2737:2023 (Vietnamese building code). For buildings above 10 stories in Binh Duong (Wind Zone IIA), design wind pressure ranges from approximately 0.83-1.2 kN/m2 depending on height and aerodynamic coefficients.

General rules:

  • Open area under 50% — wind passes through, significantly reducing load on the panel
  • 30-40mm edge hems increase panel stiffness by 3-5x compared to flat panels
  • Maximum fastener spacing: 600mm between anchor points

Surface Coating Options
