What Are Stainless Steel Trim Profiles?

Stainless steel trim profiles are thin, shaped metal strips — L-angle, U-channel, V-channel, T-bar, or hat channel cross-sections — used to cover joints, protect edges, and create decorative borders in construction and interior design. You see them everywhere: tile edge trims, wall corner guards, glass partition frames, ceiling borders, elevator door surrounds, display cases, and hundreds of other applications.

Off-the-shelf stainless trims come in only a handful of standard sizes — 10x10mm, 20x20mm, 25x25mm — with fixed thickness of 0.5-0.8mm. When your project demands a different size, a different finish, or a different thickness, the only option is custom fabrication.

Five most common profile types

ProfileCross-SectionPrimary Use
L-angleTwo flanges at 90°Wall corners, tile edges, structural brackets
U-channelThree sides forming a channelGlass clips, panel borders, guide rails
V-channelTwo flanges at acute or obtuse angleDecorative lines, gap trims, reveal channels
T-barOne horizontal + one vertical flangeDivider strips, expansion joint covers, zone separators
Hat channelOmega/hat shape, 4 bendsCeiling furring strips, panel substructure

Stock vs. Custom Profiles — When Do You Need Bespoke?

Limitations of stock profiles

Standard stainless trims sold at building material shops typically have these constraints:

  • Limited sizes: only a few common dimensions (10mm, 15mm, 20mm, 25mm)
  • Thin gauge only: mostly 0.5-0.8mm — too thin for industrial applications
  • Fixed finish: primarily 2B or hairline, no mirror or PVD options
  • Fixed length: 2.44m or 3m — wasteful if you need longer or shorter
  • Poor tolerances: mass-produced at low cost, inconsistent angles, 1-2mm dimensional variance

Advantages of custom-fabricated profiles

At Laser Tuan Thinh, our trim profile process is: laser cut a precision flat blank from sheet, then CNC bend it into shape. This method offers:

  • Any size — from ultra-small 5x5mm trims to large 100x100mm channels
  • Any thickness — from 0.5mm to 3mm (stainless 304/316)
  • Any finish — 2B, hairline #4, mirror #8, PVD color coating
  • Any length — up to 1,000mm per piece
  • CNC tolerances — dimensional ±0.1mm, angular ±0.5°
  • From 1 piece — no minimum order quantity

Technical Specifications by Profile Type

L-angle profiles

Two flanges at 90°. The most common trim type, used for wall corners, tile edges, and structural brackets.

Flange SizeThicknessMaterialNotes
10 x 10mm0.5 - 1.0mm304, 316Tile edge trim, small decorative trim
15 x 15mm0.8 - 1.2mm304, 316Wall corner, thin panel border
20 x 20mm0.8 - 1.5mm304, 316Most common size
25 x 25mm1.0 - 2.0mm304, 316Corner guard, structural bracket
30 x 30mm1.0 - 2.0mm304, 316Industrial corner trim
40 x 40mm1.2 - 2.5mm304, 316Medium-load structural bracket
50 x 50mm1.5 - 3.0mm304, 316Structural bracket, shelf support
100 x 100mm2.0 - 3.0mm304, 316Heavy structural trim

L-angles can also be fabricated with unequal flanges — for example, 15x25mm or 20x40mm — per your drawing requirements.

U-channel profiles

Three sides forming a channel. Used to clip glass panels, guide sliding panels, and cover joints.

Channel Size (width x depth)ThicknessMaterialNotes
10 x 10mm0.5 - 1.0mm304, 316Thin glass trim, decorative border
12 x 12mm0.8 - 1.0mm304, 3168-10mm glass clip
15 x 15mm0.8 - 1.2mm304, 316Panel trim, lightweight slide rail
20 x 20mm1.0 - 1.5mm304, 316Guide rail, thick glass clip
25 x 25mm1.0 - 2.0mm304, 31612mm tempered glass clip
30 x 40mm1.2 - 2.0mm304, 316Industrial guide rail
40 x 40mm1.5 - 2.0mm304, 316Cable trough, utility channel
50 x 80mm2.0 - 3.0mm304, 316Heavy-duty trough, structural

Note: U-channels require 2 bend lines. Channels that are too deep relative to their width cause bending difficulty — recommended maximum depth-to-width ratio is 3:1.

V-channel profiles

Two flanges forming angles from 15° to 170°. Used for decorative lines, reveal channels, and gap trims.

Opening AngleFlange WidthThicknessApplication
15° - 30°10 - 20mm0.5 - 1.0mmDecorative reveal lines, narrow gap trims
45°15 - 30mm0.8 - 1.5mmAngled corner trims, interior decoration
60°20 - 40mm0.8 - 2.0mmDecorative corner trim, countertop edging
90°10 - 50mm0.5 - 3.0mmSame as L-angle — the most common
120° - 170°20 - 50mm0.8 - 2.0mmObtuse corner trim, roof edge, stair nosing

V-channels with acute angles (under 30°) require special bending tooling and thin stainless (under 1.0mm) to avoid outer surface cracking.

T-bar profiles

One horizontal flange plus one vertical flange at 90°. Used as divider strips, expansion joint covers, and zone separators.

Size (horizontal x vertical)ThicknessMaterialNotes
20 x 20mm0.8 - 1.5mm304, 316Tile divider, small zone separator
25 x 25mm1.0 - 1.5mm304, 316Standard expansion joint trim
30 x 30mm1.0 - 2.0mm304, 316Ceiling grid divider, partition trim
40 x 40mm1.2 - 2.0mm304, 316Structural T-bar
50 x 50mm1.5 - 3.0mm304, 316Load-bearing T-bar

Note: T-bars fabricated from flat sheet require a special blank layout — the vertical flange is bent up from the center of the blank. Design must account for precise flat pattern width.

Surface Finish Options

Surface finish determines aesthetics, price, and durability. Options available at Laser Tuan Thinh:

FinishDescriptionPrice vs. 2BApplication
2B (mill finish)Smooth matte surface from the steel mill1x (baseline)Structural, hidden applications
Hairline #4 (satin)Unidirectional fine brush, satin sheen1.1 - 1.3xInteriors, elevators, facades — most popular
Mirror #8Full mirror polish, reflective1.3 - 1.6xHigh-end decoration, showrooms, hotels
PVD goldVacuum ion plating, gold color1.8 - 2.5xLuxury interiors, signage
PVD rose goldVacuum ion plating, rose color1.8 - 2.5xSpas, hotels, modern interiors
PVD blackVacuum ion plating, black color1.8 - 2.5xMinimalist interiors, contemporary architecture
Powder coatingThermoset powder, any RAL color1.3 - 1.8xOutdoor, industrial, custom color matching

Important notes on finishes

  • Hairline and mirror surfaces must be bent using film-protected or polyurethane dies to prevent scratching. Fabrication cost is 10-20% higher than 2B.
  • PVD coating is applied after bending is complete. Bending after PVD causes the coating to crack and peel at the bend line.
  • Mirror #8 is extremely sensitive to fingerprints and scratches. Always apply PE protective film on both sides during transport and installation.
  • Stainless 316 has a higher base material cost than 304 (roughly 30-50% more), on top of any finish surcharge.

Applications in Practice

Construction and fit-out

  • Tile edge trim — L-angle or U-channel, hairline, 8-12mm height. Covers tile edges, creates clean borders between different cladding surfaces
  • Wall corner guards — L-angle 20x20 or 25x25, hairline or mirror. Protects wall corners from impact damage while adding a decorative element
  • Glass partition trim — U-channel sized to clip 8-12mm glass. Replaces aluminum frames for a more minimal look
  • Ceiling border trim — L-angle or T-bar, creates a clean division line between ceiling and wall

Interior design and decoration

  • Countertop and shelf edging — Thin L-angle or U-channel, mirror or PVD gold. Protects edges of wood or stone surfaces
  • Display case frames — U-channel for glass, hairline finish. Creates frameless-look glass cabinets
  • Elevator door surrounds — Large L-angle, hairline or mirror. Must withstand daily impact, requires stainless 1.5mm or thicker
  • Decorative wall lines — Thin V-channel or T-bar, PVD gold/rose gold. Creates accent lines on plain walls

Industrial and technical

  • Guide rails — U-channel, 2B or hairline, precision dimensions. Guides sliding panels, roller shutters
  • Expansion joint covers — T-bar or L-angle, 2B. Covers gaps between panels, allows thermal expansion
  • Electrical enclosure trim — L-angle or U-channel, 2B. Covers panel joints in electrical cabinets, dust sealing
  • Shelf support brackets — Large L-angle, 2B or hairline. Load-bearing corner brackets for racking systems

Our Fabrication Process

1. Flat pattern design (1-2 hours)

You send drawings (DXF/DWG/STEP/PDF) or dimensional descriptions. Our engineers calculate the precise flat pattern — determining the exact sheet width needed for cutting, accounting for K-factor variations by material and thickness. A 0.5mm error in flat pattern calculation leads to incorrect finished dimensions — this is the most critical step.

2. Laser cut flat blanks

Stainless sheet is laser cut into flat blanks matching the calculated pattern. Laser cutting produces clean edges with ±0.1mm tolerance, requiring no secondary edge finishing.

  • Stainless 304/316: cuts up to 12mm
  • Maximum sheet: 3,000 x 1,500mm
  • High throughput: hundreds of blanks per hour for thin-gauge trims

3. Deburr

Laser-cut edges are deburred by tumble machine (high volume) or hand grinding. Especially important for hairline and mirror trims — burrs cause surface scratching during bending.

4. CNC bend to shape

Flat blanks are formed on a CNC hydraulic press brake into the required profile. Specifications:

  • Angle tolerance: ±0.5°
  • Dimensional tolerance: ±0.1mm
  • Real-time angle sensors — automatic springback compensation for stainless
  • Hairline/mirror trims: film-protected or polyurethane dies to prevent marking

Each profile type requires a different number of bend lines:

  • L-angle: 1 bend
  • U-channel: 2 bends
  • T-bar: 2 bends (special blank layout)
  • Hat channel: 4 bends

5. Surface treatment (if required)

  • Hairline: brushed after bending (or pre-finished hairline sheet with anti-scratch dies)
  • Mirror: polished to mirror finish
  • PVD: sent to partner PVD coating facility

6. Protective film and packaging

Every trim piece is wrapped with PE protective film on both sides, bundled by length, with cardboard spacers between layers. Prevents scratching during transit.
